Borders (5) – Following the Rabbit-Proof Fence

This is the fifth activity of a thematic unit on borders. Following the Rabbit-Proof Fence is a documentary about the shooting of the 2002 film Rabbit-Proof Fence, directed by Philip Noyce. The film featured Everlyn Sampi and Kenneth Branagh and was based on the book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence, written by Doris Pilkington Garimara in 1996 (see Borders (4) for an activity on the book, and a chronology of the story).

Students are asked to watch the opening of this documentary, with two questions in mind:

1) What is “rabbit-proof fence”?

2) How is this story relevant to the study of borders?
